When the national curriculum formally adopted ‘synthetic phonics’ as its standard method of teaching literacy; the BBC commissioned a new series of its flagship Word & Pictures strand. I became involved at an early stage, helping to develop a creative approach to teaching the new phonics. The key characters were letters of the alphabet that could only emit the sound associated with that letter. They needed to be humorous without detracting from the educational remit. Phonics is no laughing matter!

The animations introduced 5 minute magazine TV programmes. They were also used in BBC Active’s CD-Rom packs for use on Whiteboards in Schools. The packs were nominated for a BETT award in 2007 and an RTS award in 2008.
